06/12/08 California Company Promotes Cylindrical Solar Panels
Solyndra, a California based company started producing cylindrical pv panels earlier this year, claiming substantial benefits.
The thin film cells are wrapped into a cylindrical shape, then encapsulated in a glass tube, enabling them to capture light from various angles.
The company claim that the tubular design, enables large arrays to be installed on flat roof tops such as factories, without fixing, as they do not catch the wind.
Traditional flat panels need to be angled towards the sun and fixed securely as they are vulnerable to the wind.
The company claim that the speed and lower cost of installation results in a considerable reduction in the overall system cost.
